Boundaries:
invisible lines that are we define between ourselves and other people. They are unseen, but very real. These boundaries help us to know where our limits are and where to say "no". Cloud & Townsend say that "having individual boundaries is crucial to attaining happiness in life and developing rational and emotional well-being (a vital component to maintaining health)." Our boundaries affect our relationships with every other person that we cross paths with in our life.
One of the most frustrating things about going to counseling is being told to do something that you find yourself incapable of doing. Setting healthy boundaries with others is commonly one of those difficult-to-follow instructions. If you have spent any time in counseling, you've probably had your counselor talk to you about 'boundaries'. You've probably been coached in how to say 'no' or where to set limits. And, quite possibly, you've found yourself unable to do it. Or, even worse, you've managed to do it... but only every now and then.
At Potter's Wheel Counseling, we take a different approach to boundaries. While we agree that boundaries are an important part of being emotionally healthy, we also understand that sometimes it's not as easy as just being told to 'set boundaries'. Instead, we try to figure out what's getting in the way of your setting boundaries... and then we work on repairing that. What we've discovered is that our clients tend to begin setting good, healthy boundaries, without even trying, once the damage in their lives has been repaired. Give us a chance to help you get ready to set boundaries. Call 770-386-0776 or CLICK to send an email requesting an appointment.
